Spartans Finish Second at Home Meet

RESULTS: 2014 UD Spartan Invite

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Track team hosted the 2014 UD Spartan Invite in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday night. The Spartans won five events and were runner up in four more. UD also set two school records and tied a facility record. Dubuque took second as a team with 155 points. 

The Spartans were strong in the relays with the 4x400m team of Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet), Andy Sierra (Fruitland, Iowa/Louisa-Muscatine), Remington Meggers (DeWitt, Iowa/Central DeWitt), and Ryan Mattingly (Janesville, Iowa/Janesville) setting a school record in the final track event of the night. The 4x4 team finished with a time of 3:27.26, lowering the old school record from 2013 by 2.03 seconds. The UD 4x200m Relay team of Marcus Weathers (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie), Benjamin Kroll (Platteville, Wis./Platteville), Derek Moorman (Elgin, Ill./Elgin), and Kebba Bojang (Madison, Wis./Madison East) won with a time of 1:34.82 after Cornell did not finish the race. 

Individually on the track, Payton Nevills (Savanna, Ill./West Carroll) provided the highlight of the night with a school record performance in the 1 Mile Run. Nevills finished seventh behind six Augustana runners with a time of 4:29.65. Nevills also broke the school record in the 5,000m Run last week at the UW-Platteville Invitational. UD earned two sprint victories with Valcin winning the 55m Dash at 6.53 seconds and Evan Zurbuchen (Hollandale, Wis./Madison West) out running the field in the 55m Hurdles at 7.86 seconds. Zurbuchen moved into third all-time at UD with time. Meggers also moved in the third spot all-time at UD in the 800m Run with a third place finish at 2:00.54. Kyle Williams (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) finished second behind Valcin in the 55m Dash at 6.59 seconds. 

Valcin led the Spartans in the field events with a first place finish and his win sixth victory in seven meets this year in the pole vault. Valcin cleared 4.80m (15' 9.0") to tie the facility record that was set exactly five years ago to the day. He finished three heights ahead of teammate Nicholas Kazmierczak (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) who took second place. UD dominated the high jump going 1-2-3 with Jeremy Lawson (Lake Isabella, Calif./Kern Valley) leading the way at 1.90m (6' 2.75"). Antwone Lindsey (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) took second while DuVaun Goodlow (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished third. Bojang and Lindsey also went second-third in the triple jump. 

UD throwers put together a strong performance in the weight throw with Mario-John Otchere (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett) taking second at 14.81m (48' 7.25") - the second best time all-time at UD. Freshman Ronald Brown (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa West) finished third on the day while posting the third best throw in school history at 14.73m (48' 4.0"). Conner Hirt (Hainesville, Ill./Grayslake Central) also moved up the all-time list into fifth at UD.
