Valcin Qualifies for NCAA Division-III Indoor Track Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - University of Dubuque junior Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) was announced as 1 of 15 individuals who will complete in the Men's Pole Vault at the upcoming NCAA Division-III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Valcin enters the championships ranked first with a mark of 5.10m (16' - 8.75"), 5.5" ahead of second place. The pole vault will take place on Friday, March 14th beginning at 11:00 am. 

Valcin has led D-III from start-to-finish having posted a 4.70m (15' 5.0") height in the opening weekend at the Wartburg Relays. Two weeks later, he increased his lead with a jump of 4.95m (16' - 2.75") at the Prairie Wolf Invitational on the same track that he will be looking for a national championship. Valcin has been consistent all season long, winning the pole vault in nine of ten meets. 

The 2014 NCAA D-III Indoor Championships will be held on March 14th and 15th in Lincoln, Neb. at Nebraska's Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska Wesleyan is the official hosts for the championships.

The Top-5 challengers for Valcin has a midwest feel as three of the five individuals are from schools within 200 miles of Dubuque. Seeds 2-6 are Bryan Klister of UW-La Crosse (4.96m), Jared Bradfish of UW-Platteville (4.95m), Tim Moses of Messiah (4.90m), Michael Bennett of Univ. of Chicago (4.90m), and Benjamin Schreck of MIT (4.90m).

Valcin is looking to become the fifth UD Indoor Track National Champion joining Basil Steele (3-time 55m Hurdles - 2003, 04, 05) and Phillip Jones (55m Dash - 2011).
