Spartans Lockington Honored by USTFCCCA

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque Track & Field Graduate Assistant Coach Patrick Lockington was named United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division-III Central Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. A first year assistant, Lockington made an immediate impact for UD as the pole vault and high jump coach. The USTFCCCA honored both genders' top track athlete, field athlete, men's head coach, women's head coach, men's assistant coach, and women's asistant coach in all eight regions. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA members and will be honored on Thursday, March 13th at the pre-nationals banquet in Lincoln, Neb. before the NCAA Division-III Indoor Track & Field Championships. 

Lockington coached student-athletes claimed All-Iowa Conference honors in the men's pole vault (First-Second), women's pole vault (Second), and women's high jump (Second). In addition, three UD men finished in the top seven at the IIAC Championships. The Spartans top vaulter this season, Rick Valcin, enters this weekends NCAA D-III Indoor Championships as the top-seed with a Division-III best height of 16' - 8.75". On the women's side, Brenda Breimon finished second at the IIAC Championships after losing a jump off for the title. Valcin and Breimon have each set new school records during the 2014 Indoor Season. 

The pole vaulters performance this season has been unlike any in UD history as the men have recorded the two best scores of all-time while the women have posted the first and fourth best heights. In the high jump, the Spartan women have recorded five of the ten best heights in school history while the men have cleared four of the top ten. The UD women finished in third place at the IIAC Championships with 90 points, 18 points from the pole vault and high jump. The Spartan men finished in fourth place with 98.5 points, 26.5 points from the pole vault and high jump.
