DUBUQUE, IOWA - After a season as an independent and three non-league games, the University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team played its first Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) on Tuesday night. The Spartans faced a familiar opponent by making the short trip down Loras Blvd. to take on the Duhawks. After falling behind 6-1 at the half, UD fought back with six second half goals for a 11-7 final score. Dubuque is now 0-4 on the year.

The Spartans put together a strong second half outscoring Loras 6-5 over the final 30 minutes. Bridget Schirmers (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) scored five goals in the half to lead UD. Schirmers scored three of four Spartan goals in the first 15 minutes as UD pulled within two at 7-5 Loras. Robyn Wittkopf (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) scored her third goal of the year during the stretch of four straight UD goals. Loras answered with four straight goals of their own to pull away.

Kelly Wetherald (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) scored the only UD goal of the first half to snap a 6-0 Loras run. Schirmers also scored two goals late to give her a team high five goals in the game. Danielle Williams (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had five saves in goal.

UD finished the game with a 26-23 advantage in shots while also leading 25-16 in groundballs. The Spartans forced 23 turnovers in the game with only 17 of their own.
