Kuehn Signs with Mannheim Tornados

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque alum Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills) has been announced as the newest member of the Mannheim Tornados. A First Team All-Iowa Conference selection in 2013, Kuehn is the first Spartans baseball player to sign a professional contract since Joe Hapanionek signed deals in 2005 and 2006. Kuehn will report to Mannheim, Germany in March to begin preparing for the season opener on April 6th. 

An outfielder and pitcher, Kuehn finished his two seasons at UD with a career batting average of .316 (81-256) with 16-doubles and 45-runs batted in. As a senior he took on a larger role as a pitcher appearing in ten games. Kuehn finished the year with a 3.67-earned run average with 3-wins, 43-strike outs, 56.1-innings pitched, and 5-complete games. He also held the opposition to a .227 batting average. A Business Admin graduate, he finished school in December of 2013 while also being named to the Deans List in his final semester.

With 11 titles, Mannheim is regarded as the most successful team in the First Division Baseball Bundesliga Championships. The Tornados were found in 1975 and won six straight championships from 1984-1989. Spencer joins his brother Justin Kuehn, who plays for the reigning champion Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg, in the highest level of baseball in Germany.

The 2014 Spartans begin the Iowa Conference season on Saturday, March 29th against Central College at the UD Baseball Field. UD and Central will play one-seven inning game and one-nine inning game on Saturday and Sunday to complete the four game series. The Spartans enter the weekend with a 4-7 record while Central is 8-3 on the year.
