PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Dubuque softball team captured another sweep on the road by collecting a pair of wins against the UW-Platteville Pioneers on Wednesday afternoon. UD trailed 0-1 entering the seventh inning in game one and battled back for a 2-1 victory. In game two, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-2 win. The two wins earned head coach Wendi Wipperfurth the all-time UD career wins record with her 65th victory in just her fourth season. Previous mark was held by Ted Rebholz (1984-1992) with a career record of 64-212 overall and an IIAC record of 26-105. UD improved their overall mark to 15-5.

The Spartans used late game heroics in the opener and shutdown efforts by the host Pioneers. It appeared a lone run might be enough to win the first game. UW-P added a run in the first inning on four hits. A hard throw from right field to homeplate stopped a second score and ended the inning with two Pioneer runners on base. The two teams were held scoreless until the seventh inning.

In the Top of the 7th, Tori Woltz singled to third base. Dia Borden pinch ran for Woltz. Carlee Grunder singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw; as Borden advanced to third. Gianna Kuras earned the walk. Jennifer Pohlman reached on a fielder's choice; Kuras advanced to second; Grunder advanced to third; as Borden was thrown out at home (ss to c). Megan Davis pinch ran for Kuras. Ainsley Billesbach fouled out to catcher. Meggie Schmidt singled up the middle, advanced to second on the throw, earned 2 RBI's as Pohlman advanced to third; Davis and Grunder scored. Aulwes struck out looking to end the inning with 2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 2 runners left on base. UD held on in the bottom with runners on second and third with two outs. UW-P ended on a ground out to the pitcher after collecting a hit and stranding two runners on base.

Amanda Williams captured the complete game victory after facing 28 batters. She gave up seven hits,  allowed one earned run, and struck out nine batters. Woltz ended the game 2-2 at the plate and Pohlman finished the afternoon 2-3.

In the closing game, UD led from the start and never trailed in the 8-2 win. The Spartans finished with 17 hits as 14 Spartans saw action and nine collected a hit. Schmidt led the offense by going 3-5 at the plate, scored two runs and had three RBI's. Schmidt had one double as teammate Caitlin Aulwes had the lone triple in the game. Schmidt and Woltz would both end with three hits.

Megan Loes went the distance on the mound after facing 30 batters. She gave up just one lone earned run anf forced the Pioneers into 14 ground outs and four flyouts.

The Spartans return to Iowa Conference play on Saturday when they host the #12-ranked Coe College Kohawks (20-3 overall, 2-0 in IIAC) at 2:00 p.m. The Kohawks enter the game on a seven game win streak, the Spartans have won 8-9.
