UD to Participate in Dubuque Family STEM Festival

On Saturday, April 12, the University of Dubuque will participate in the second annual Dubuque Area Family STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Festival. Students and professors from UD’s aviation, science, education, computer information systems, and mathematics departments will present engaging activities for festival participants.
“STEM education is so exciting!,” commented Debra Stork, professor of education and department head. “At the University of Dubuque it is our privilege to prepare our students to meet challenges of the 21st century and beyond. This opportunity to share STEM activities with the families of our community is rare and wonderful.”
Students visiting the UD activity booths will be able to participate in a number of STEM-related activities. They will have the opportunity to: experience flight using the aviation flight simulator; work with 3-D maps and rain runoff simulations; look through microscopes to view samples of Mississippi River water; play a skull matching game; study geology through a Crayola rock cycle; see NASA lunar and meteorite samples; explore how origami combines mathematics and the arts; explore the technology of microcontrollers; learn how to compile sports statistics; and test their physical attributes of power, strength, balance, and flexibility.
The Dubuque Area Family STEM Festival is hosted by the Northeastern Iowa Regional STEM Hub at the University of Northern Iowa. Third through eighth grade students from school districts throughout Northeast Iowa will have the unique opportunity to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on experiments and activities from more than 60 exhibitors. The festival will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Grand River Center. The event is free and open to the public.
