Spartan Linksters Lead Opening Round, Finish Third

NORMAL, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's golf team stretched to an early two streak lead in one of the toughest field of teams in a tournament they have faced in 2013-14. #1-ranked Illinois Wesleyan trailed the Spartans by two strokes after the opening round. UD shot a low score of 301, hosts Illinois Wesleyan finished with a 303, and Millikin finished with a team score of 306 for the 21 team tourney.

UD's Mitchell Sobotta and Josh Schuberg led the Spartans with rounds of 74 on the Par 72 6,563 yard Ironwood Golf Course, the pair are tied for second overall. Eric Wolfe was eighth with a round of 75, Martin Odegard shot a 78 for a tie for 20th place, and Cameron Shere finished with an 82 to tie for 47th overall.

On Saturday, the hosts dug deep and Illinois Wesleyn shot the lowest round of the tourney (289) to claim the team title with a score of 592. Nebraska Wesleyan edged past the Spartans for second by shooting a 290 in the final day and 599 for the tourney. UD finished out of 1st or 2nd for just the first time with a third place finish with a 602 score.

Mitch Sobotta tied for 2nd overall after shooting a 145. Josh Schuberg tied for 15th (151), Eric Wolfe and Martin Odegard tied for 19th (153), and Cameron Shere tied for 70th (166).
