Iowa Conference Honors Valcin as Performer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWAThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central softball player Whitney Sowers and Coe baseball player AJ Reuter have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 6, 2014. The Conference also named Performers of the Week in six spring sports. A trio of Spartans earned Performer of the Week honors with Josh Eastman (Baseball), Mitchell Sobotta (Men's Golf), and Rick Valcin (Men's Outdoor Track) being honored. 

University of Dubuque junior Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) was named Men's Outdoor Track & Field (Field) Performer of the Week. Valcin won the pole vault at the Wartburg Outdoor Select Meet with a school record mark of 5.0m (16'-4.75"). After one week of competition he leads Division-III by 3.5 inches. 

The 2014 NCAA Championships Indoor Pole Vault runner-up and Iowa Conference Champion, Valcin cleared 5.10m (16' 8.75") at the UW-Platteville Qualifying Meet which stood as the top height of 2014 Indoors. He was also selected as the IIAC Indoor Track Performer of the Week on January 27, 2014.
