The Spartans came out swinging in the opener with three runs and seven hits in the first three innings. UD held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh before Wartburg rallied. The Knights led off the inning by drawing a walk and were looking to advance the runner with a sac bunt. After two unsuccessful attempts, the Wartburg hitter swung away and hit the 2-2 offering out of the park to take a 4-3 lead.

After stranding two runners in the first, UD was able to get on the board first with two runs on three hits in the second inning. The rally began with Mac Shepherd (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Central) drawing a walk and advancing to second on a ground ball. Having two outs did not slow down the Spartans bats as Ryan Karrick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) doubled to score Shepherd for the games first run. Eddie Pablo (Yelm, Wash./Yelm) hit an infield single to put runners on first and second for Dalton Garst (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago). Garst preceded to line the first pitch of the at bat into centerfield to score Karrick from second.

UD added a single run in the third on a RBI single by Steve Ryan (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View) to score McWhite. McWhite led off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a ground ball to the right side of the infield. Wartburg scored two runs in the fifth off starting pitcher Josh Eastman (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton). Eastman finished his day after six innings, striking out five and walking none.

Closer Justin Naval (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) took the ball from Eastman for the seventh and allowed a two-run home run by Wartburg. The loss dropped Naval's record to 2-1 on the year.

Casanova stole his 22nd and 23rd base of the season in the game.

UD once again jumped out to an early lead in game two as they scored five runs on nine hits through four innings. Four Spartans recorded multi-hit games with Casanova, McWhite, Ryan, and Karrick each finishing with two hits. The Spartans and Knights exchanged runs in the first inning with Wartburg manufacturing a run without a hit. Dubuque answered by loading the bases with one out on a Wartburg error and two singles to right field. Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit a chopper to short and beat out
the double play attempt.

A lead off walk by Garst and single by Casanova forced Wartburg to go to the bullpen early. After a pop out, Parisi picked up his second RBI of the game with a single down the right field line to score Garst. With Casanova on third, Michael Salazar (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) put down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt.

The Spartans added two runs in the fourth on four singles. Ryan and Karrick singled to start the inning and advanced to second and third on a sac bunt by Pablo. Garst then lined an 0-1 pitch into centerfield to score Ryan. With runners on first and third, Casanova beat out a potential double play ball to score Karrick.

Wartburg held UD scoreless from the fifth through eighth inning as they scored one in the sixth and two in the ninth. Stumpf earned his first collegiate victory with a complete game, six strikeout performance.

The Spartans defense was flawless while also turning two double plays. The UD defense also battled tough wind which led to some outstanding plays being made including two diving plays by Ryan in right field.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue IIAC action on Friday, April 18th at Buena Vista. Game time on Friday is 3:30 while Saturdays doubleheader will start at 1:00 pm in Storm Lake.
