Record Setting Day for UD Women's Lacrosse

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team had an outstanding day on Saturday with a 20-5 victory against the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The Spartans 20 goals set a new school record while their five goals allowed was also a new record for fewest goals allowed in a game. Bridget Schirmers (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) eight goals  tied the school record for individual goals in a game. UD has won four straight games to move their record to 4-7 overall. 

During the current four game winner streak, the Spartans have outscored its opponents 62-30. UD beat Fontbonne 18-11 to begin the streak. The second and third wins came on neutral fields with a 13-8 win over Dallas in St. Louis and a 11-6 victory against Benedictine at Loras.

The Spartans scored quickly with Kelly Wetherald (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) scoring an unassisted goal 0:35 seconds into the game. After an Illinois Tech goal that tied the game at 1-1, Schirmers scored to give UD a lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game. Wetherald and Schirmers each scored their second goals of the game within a minute to give Dubuque a 4-1 lead in the sixth minute. 

ITT scored their second goal of the game before UD went on to score six unanswered goals to take a 10-2 lead. Judy Borah (Mammoth Lakes, Calif./Pacific Palisades Charter) and Lisa Rosas (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) scored thier first goals of the game at the front and back end of the run. Schirmers played a big part of the Spartans pulling away from Illinois Tech as she scored three goals to give her five goals in the first half. 

UD dominated the first half with a 20-9 advantage in shots while also forcing seven turnovers without commiting any themselves. The Spartans were also 10-10 in clear attempts as they held a 11-3 lead on the scoreboard. 

The second half began with four UD goals as Ashley Geraghty (Palatine, Ill./Palatin) scored her first of the game 0:41 seconds into the period. Alora Esparza (Silvis, Ill./United Township) scored back-to-back goals and Schirmers scored her sixth goal as they opened up a 15-3 lead. An Illinois Tech goal at the 18:10 mark sparked another run for the Spartans as they scored five straight again.

Danielle Williams (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) earned her first win of the season as she recorded 10 saves in 60:00 minutes in goal. Brooke Crossen (Madison, Wis./Oregon) picked up a team high two groundballs and won five draw controls. 

UD controlled the game with a 35-20 lead in shots attempted, held a 10-1 advantage in turnovers forced, and won 14-22 draw control situations. The Spartans also finished 15-16 in clear attempts.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Beloit College on April 23rd in a Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference game. Game time at Oyen Field is 4:30 pm.
