Spartans Win Intracity Game with Clarke

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with a 6-2 non-conference victory against Clarke University. The Spartans win on Tuesday was the first win against the Crusaders since 2004, stopping a five game losing streak. Sophomore Daniel Karnick (Winona, Minn./Cotter) made the most of his first career collegiate start by pitching five shutout innings to earn the win. UD improves to 11-21 on the year.

The Spartans hitters provided all the offense needed early with four runs in the first and two in the second. Karnick and Reed Stumpf (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) pitched seven shutout innings before Clarke scored in the eighth.  Will Fogel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Steve Ryan (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View) each had two hits. 

UD batted around in the first inning on their way to four runs on four hits and a Clarke error. The inning began with Eddie Pablo (Yelm, Wash./Yelm) reaching base on a throwing error by the Clarke catcher. Fogel walked to put runners on first and second for Daniel Casanova (Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) who singled to center field for an RBI single and a 1-0 UD lead. With runners on first and third, Ryan singled to right field to score Fogel. The Spartans continued to play agressive on the base paths as Ryan went from first to third on a wild pitch that scored Casanova. Spartans DH Michael Salazar drove in the fourth run of the inning with a two-out RBI single up the middle. 

Pablo started the Spartans second inning rally with a triple to right center on the first pitch of the inning. UD continued to swing away with Fogel turning on the second pitch of the inning for a RBI single to force a Clarke pitching change. With two outs, Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) doubled and scored on a RBI single by Ryan to give Dubuque a 6-0 lead. 

Making his first collegiate start, Karnick pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out five. Stumpf pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning on short rest having pitched on Saturday.

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to Iowa Conference action on Friday, April 25th against Simpson College at 1:00 pm. UD and Simpson will finish the four game series on Saturday, April 26th. Joseph Kilsdonk, Vince Parisi, and Steve Ryan will be recognized on Saturday for Senior Day.
