Spartans Four Game Winning Streak Snapped

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse had their four game winning streak snapped on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans lost 21-9 to Beloit College (10-6, 6-3) in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) matchup at Oyen Field. Bridget Schirmers (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) scored three goals and assisted on a fourth goal. UD is 4-8 overall and 2-5 in the MWLC. 

Schirmers became the first Spartan to reach 50 points (44-goals/6-assists) in a season with her goal with 1:08 left in the first half. The goal was her third of the game and second scored in the final three minutes of the first half.

The Spartans scoring began with Kelly Wetherald (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finding the net 1:05 into the game to tie the Bucs at 1-1. After two Beloit goals, Schirmers scored her first of the day on a Lisa Rosas (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) pass. Beloit scored five unanswered goals to take control of the game. Cassandra Berger (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) scored her first goal of the season after picking up a groundball in front of the net and beating the Beloit goalkeeper. 

UD and Beloit exchanged quick goals with Alora Esparza (Silvis, Ill./United Township) scoring to make the score 9-4 Beloit with under 12 minutes to play in the first half. Over the next six minutes, Beloit scored six straight goals to open a 15-4 lead on the Spartans. 

Beloit scored the first four goals of the second half in ten minutes to push the lead to 20-7. Wetherald scored her second of the game with 13:34 to begin three straight goals by UD. Wetherald assisted on the goal by Anna Yackshaw (Clinton, Iowa/Prince of Peace) for her second goal of the season. Rosas scored the final goal of the game with 7:27 left in the second period with the score 20-9. Beloit added a late goal as the clock neared zero for a final score of 21-9. 

Rosas picked up a team high three groundballs for the Spartans while Ashley Geraghty (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a team leading three draw controls. Danielle Williams (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) took the loss in goal with nine goals allowed in 18:17. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans hit the road on Saturday, April 26th at Carthage College. Game time is 4:00 pm.
