UD Social Justice Class to Hold Second Annual Debate

On Wednesday, May 7, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., the University of Dubuque’s Honors Program will hold the Second Annual Social Justice Debate in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall. The intent of the debate is to provide illumination on two controversial topics. Students will engage in parliamentary-style debating, which involves alternating rounds and audience participation. Doors open at 5:30; the public is encouraged to attend this open event.
Two topics will be the focus of the May 7 debate – physician-assisted suicide and the University’s alcohol policy. Four students will debate each of the two topics – two arguing the affirmative and two arguing the negative.
In the legalization of physician-assisted suicide case, Kari Dahlen, a junior double majoring in criminal justice and psychology from Bloomington, MN, and Tiffany Duncan, a junior criminal justice major from Hartford, WI, will argue the affirmative. Michael Salazar, a first-year student double majoring in criminal justice and marketing from Scottsdale, AZ, and Sabrina Vonderhaar, a first-year student double majoring in criminal justice and psychology from New Vienna, IA, will argue the negative.
The second debate focuses on whether the University of Dubuque should adopt a "wet" campus policy, allowing students above the age of 21 to possess and consume alcohol. Benjamin Kroll, a first-year student double majoring in business administration and sports management from Platteville, WI, and Remington Meggers, a first-year criminal justice major from Grand Mound, IA, will argue the affirmative. Erny Pacheco, a sophomore double majoring in criminal justice and mathematics from Chicago, IL and Ryan Carolan, a senior communication major from Dubuque, IA, will argue the negative.
This event is open to the public; admission is free, but a ticket is required, and may be picked up at Farber Box Office inside Heritage Center, open from 12:00 – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling 563-585-SHOW(7469), or online at www.dbq.edu/heritagecenter. Tickets will be available from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. the evening of the event.
