Wolfe Named Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther softball player Becca Girvan and University of Dubuque golfer Eric Wolfe (Cuba City, Wis./Cuba City) have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 27. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in six spring sports.
In addition to Male Athlete of the Week honors, Wolfe earned Men's Golfer of the Week. He shot back-to-back 70's in the first two rounds of the IIAC Men's Golf Championships over the weekend under difficult conditions at Finkbine Golf Course. His 36 hole total of 140 (-4 under par) gives him a five stroke lead for medalist honors at the halfway point of the championships. The highlights of his opening round were an eagle on the par-5, sixth hole and three straight birdies on the back nine. Round Two highlights include a chip-in from the fringe on the 18th hole and three back nine birdies.
The Spartans lead the team race for the IIAC automatic bid into the Division-III NCAA Championships by seven shots over defending champion Central. Rounds Three and Four continue at the Dubuque Golf & Country Club on Friday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 3rd. The Spartans opening round total of 295 is the lowest single round score through two rounds.
The UD senior is the second UD student-athlete to earn Men's Golf Performer of the Week honors with Mitchell Sobotta (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) earning the honor on April 7th. Wolfe has nine top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments this season including first place finishes at the Elmhurst Fall Invitational and Ronnie Eastman Invitational. He is a three-time All-IIAC honoree having tied for fifth as a freshman, tied for sixth as a sophomore, and tied for seventh as a junior.
