May 6, 2014 | J.Crane

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWAThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther softball player Kristen Winter and University of Dubuque golfer Eric Wolfe (Cuba City, Wis. / Cuba City) have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, May 4, 2014. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in six spring sports.

Wolfe won the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Men's Golfer of the Week honors for the second straight week. The Spartans senior won medalist honors by 11 shots (4 Round total of 288) at the 2014 IIAC Championships. He clinched the individual title with a final round total of 73, the lowest round of the day at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club on Saturday. Wolfe opened the weekend with a 75 as he increased his lead to seven shots going into Round 4. He shot back-to-back 70's in the first two rounds of the championships under difficult conditions at Finkbine Golf Course to take a five shot lead at the halfway point.

The Spartans team total of 1,210 shots earned them a seven shot victory over Central, who had won five straight conference titles. UD opened the championships with a 295, the lowest round for any team during the championships. The conference title was the first 39 years for the men's golf program. The victory automatically qualifies the Spartans for the 2014 NCAA Division-III Men's Golf Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Also earning All-Iowa Conference honors for the Spartans were Josh Schuberg (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) in sixth place and Martin Odegard (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) in eighth place.

Wolfe has ten top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments this season including first place finishes at the Elmhurst Fall Invitational and Ronnie Eastman Invitational. He is a four-time All-IIAC honoree having tied for fifth as a freshman, tied for sixth as a sophomore, and tied for seventh as a junior. His win is the first for a Spartan since 1975 when Jim Kinney won at the Meadows in Dubuque (UD's home course at the time).
