Spartan Softball Split with Duhawks

The University of Dubuque and Loras College softball teams joined forces for National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) StrikeOut Cancer game on Thursday and raised over $1,600 for the local American Cancer Society. The two schools would split the series with UD capturing game one by a 12-9 score before the Duhawks rallied to take game two by a 10-2 margin in five innings.

The University of Dubuque men's golf team opened the 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Invite with a round of 307 and followed up wih a 317 on day two to place 12th in the competitive 20 team field with a two day total of 624. Josh Schuberg led the Spartans after he shot rounds of 74, 76 to finish tied for 14th overall with a two round score of 150. Troy Krueger shot rounds of 75, 76 (151) to tie for 18th overall. A field of 104 golfers competed in the two day invite.

The Spartans lone loss was a marathon 13 inning defeat 3-4 in the first game on Saturday, April 4. UD rallied back to capture the second game 8-7 to improve their IIAC record to 4-6 and their overall record to 9-13.

The contest originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, was postponed due to inclement weather the past two days in Iowa. The Spartans captured the opener 3-1 and lost the nightcap 3-8. A short rest and the Spartans return home to host the Buena Vista University Beavers on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The University of Dubuque softball team returned home on Saturday and captured a split with the Buena Vista University Beavers (13-14 overall, 4-4 in IIAC). The Spartans lost the opener when they allowed four runs to score in the first two innings on four hits. BVU held on to a 4-1 victory. UD once again fell behind early in the second game of the doubleheader by a 3-0 score after the first inning. UD added a run in the second and took the lead in the fifth when they scored three runs on four hits. BVU threatened at the top of the seventh with two runners on and one out until they hit into a doubleplay to stop any chance they had with the final score 4-3 in favor of the Spartans.

Josh Schuberg finished fourth with a score of 145 and teammate Chance Manternach won the tie-break for fifth place over AIB's Andy Frasier with a score of 146.

The #36-ranked Coe College Kohawks (16-4 overall, 5-0 in IIAC) made the short drive to Dubuque and quick work of the Spartans, taking the match 8-1. UD's Ranfer Hernandez playing #4 singles def. Matt Moore 2-6, 6-1, 12-10 for the lone Spartan victory. He improved to 11-6 overall in singles play.

The University of Dubuque softball team continued their busy week of eight games in seven days and faced a top contender in #13-ranked UW-Whitewater on their home field on Thursday. UD scored first in game one, but the hosts Warhawks pecked their way back into the game winning 8-1. In the nightcap, the Spartans trailed 2-5 after the top of the sixth when Meggie Schmidt launched a two RBI homerun. The hosts would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the victory to 9-2 in favor of UW-Whitewater.
