Men’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Two OT Bout with Grinnell

Sep 3, 2014

GRINNELL, Iowa – A little luck and some defense goes a long ways as the University of Dubuque men’s soccer team fought to a 0-0 tie with Grinnell after two overtimes.

Gonzalo Hernandez missed high with four seconds to go in regulation as the Spartans toughed it out despite being outshot 5-2 over the duration of both OT’s. Dani Morrilo and Kahlin Gonzalez attempted a corner kick and shot in the waning moments of the first OT and second OT, respectively, but the Spartans came up empty handed.

Neither UD or Grinnell (0-1-1) were lacking in the opportunity department after the Spartans booted 22 shots and the Tigers tallied 20 of their own. Instead it was left to the respective goalies to save face as the Spartans’ (1-1-1) Jose Resendiz saved six shots while Grinnell’s Isaiah Tyree stopped 10.

Both teams featured eight players with a shot on goal with Spartan Brandon Wiley leading the charge with a game-high four shots on goal. UD would finish up with 12 SOG and Grinnell countered with 8 SOG.

The UD men’s soccer team looks for a successful 2014 home debut against Milwaukee School of Engineering at 3:30 p.m. this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 6.
