Women Harriers Paced by Ortiz at 53rd Les Duke Invitational

GRINNELL, Iowa - The University of Dubuque's Fabiola Ortiz finished just a minute out of first place for the Spartan women's cross country team at the 53rd Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. Ortiz, a freshman, finished the 6K race in 6th place overall in a time 23:07. Senior Brenda Nava placed 29th overall in 24:54 and Sybbie Sears was 31st in 25:00.
Fabiola Ortiz continued her rapid ascent up the UD best times list with the second-fastest 6k time of 23:07. She now sits a mere 30 seconds away from setting the school record. Her time earned the highest individual finish of any Spartan at sixth-place overall. Brenda Nava led the next four with a 29th overall finish in 24:54. The trio of fearless freshmen followed in her wake as Sybbie Sears (31st, 25:00), Skylar Brooks (41st, 25:33), and Kristin Mackenburg (42nd, 25:34) posted the 13th, 19th, and 20th best 6k time in UD history, respectively.
Senior Sam Holen (66th, 25:46) and Kiersten Wenthold (68th, 25:49) rounded out the top-7 and helped produce an average-time of 24:50 which is the fastest in school history!
“We are getting closer to full strength and are gaining some great race experience,” said Assistant Coach Geoff Gundlach on the team’s current status. “We had a great effort from everyone today and took advantage of ideal running conditions.”
The Spartan harriers take a week off before heading down to Rock Island, Ill. to compete at the Augustana Brissman-Lundeen Invite on September 26th at 5:00 p.m.
The Spartans finished with 149 points among the 87 runners who ran the tough course.
