Men's Soccer Lose on Late Goal

Sep 17, 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men' soccer team and the UW-Platteville Pioneers played a balanced match on Wednesday evening with both teams seeing quality shots on goal. Through 86 minutes it appeared as though the contest might be headed for overtime, knotted at 0-0, before the Pioneers Mbodje Sarr took advantage of the ball bouncing off a Spartan defender. He collected the ball and shot it in the goal as the Spartans keeper, Riley Jensen was scrambling to block the attempt in front of the net as the ball sailed over his head for the lone goal of the evening (86:37) in favor of the Pioneers 1-0. Jensen stopped five shots on goal. UW-P out shot the Spartans 13-11, but both squads finished the final half with seven shots each.

A well played night of soccer among the two squads witnessed a caution free match under ideal conditions of mid-September on Oyen Field. Leo Lenth led the Spartans with three shots and two on goal. Brandon Wiley and Dani Morello would both finish with two shots with each having one on goal. UD led in corner kicks 5-2. This season the Spartans have 97 shots with Gonzalo Hernandez out front with 22 shots and a pair of goals and an assist.

The Spartans will host Macalester College on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 p.m. Macalester (3-3-1) hosts Hamline University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
