Men’s Soccer Team Suffers Tough Loss Against Macalester

Sep 21, 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque couldn’t overcome 78th minute goal by Macalester in foul-riddled loss, 1-0.

With over 30 fouls called between the two teams it was a stop-and-go affair. Macalester (5-3-1) as they handled their business in the first half after outshooting UD, controlling possession, and limiting the Spartans’ opportunities in their box. The Spartans (1-5-2) came out firing in the second half with two good looks from Brandon Wiley that included one off the post and another just left of the target.

No matter, Macalester found a way by netting the first goal of the day off an interrupted cross that set up Ionatan Kuperwajs for the goal. UD’s Billy Belmonte provided the Spartans’ lone shot on goal in the final 13 minutes that was eventually saved. It was a close call as Belmonte’s header hit the cross bar and nearly bounced in over the goal line.

Unfortunately, the Spartans outshot Macalester, 10-3, in the second half and 12-8 overall but couldn’t quite get over the hump. Goalkeeper Riley Jensen seeks his first win of the season (0-3-1) after just two career starts. He flashed great awareness and athleticism in the box after deflecting multiple crosses while thwarting the Macalester attack. He had three saves on the afternoon.

The Spartans are winless against Macalester in two games overall.

UD prepares for their final non-conference skirmish against Monmouth College at Oyen Field on Wednesday, September 24th at 7:00 p.m.
