Sep 27, 2014

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Freshman Alec Bass cruised to the 2nd-fastest 8k time in University of Dubuque history (26:18) as the Spartan men finished 20th overall at the Augustana Brissman-Lundeen Invitational.

It was the biggest meet they have faced all year as the flat, open Saukie golf course appealed to the masses. Over 40 teams participated on the men’s side with the University of Chicago bringing home the team title with 74 points. UD’s 20th place finish garnered 549 points.

Bass cruised to a 43rd place finish overall and was one of the top-5 freshman in a race that featured 500 runners. The No. 2 Spartan finisher was Payton Nevills who placed 71st with a time of 26:48 that left him five seconds off his personal best. Completing the Spartan five was freshman Jack Lindsay (111th, 27:37), who beat his personal record by two seconds, Jordan Murray (119th, 27:45), and Jonathan Berland (205th, 30:24).

“We are working hard and I think our performance was commensurate to what we should expect with having two hard weeks of training in our legs,” assistant coach Geoff Gundlach said regarding the meet and their expectations. “We are trying to get a few key components healthy, and we need some to step up in the next month of the season.”

The Spartans will take their talents right on down the road, October 4th at 11:00 a.m., to the Dr. Tucker Invite hosted by rival Loras College.

NOTES: They were without head coach Chad Gunnelson, whose wife gave birth to their first child on Friday ... Two Varsity regulars, Remington Meggers and Matt Zittritsch, sat out due to injury.
