Jensen and the Mens Soccer team Tie No. 16 Wartburg in Double OT

Oct 18, 2014

WAVERLY, Iowa – Goalkeeper Riley Jensen made a season-high 11 saves, including three in double overtime, as the University of Dubuque men’s soccer team stopped No. 16 Wartburg’s five-game winning streak with a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

The Spartans (5-6-3, 3-1-1 IIAC) handed the Knights their third double overtime draw of the year and gave them their first tie in conference play.

Both scores occurred quickly with Wartburg (10-2-3, 4-0-1 IIAC) getting the party started as the Iowa Conference points-leader Dan Nadeau tacked on a goal in the ninth minute of play. That score gave him his 11th goal of the year to go along with seven assists. UD’s Brandon Wiley countered with his team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 20th minute. The lower left corner of the goal was the “hot” corner as both scores snuck by their respective keepers in that location.

Jensen was busy from the get-go after facing 30 Wartburg shots, including five in the second overtime, and 16 corner kicks. He and the UDefense held their own after the Spartan offensive mustered 13 shots and just one corner kick.

It was a testy affair after five yellow cards were issued throughout the game with four of those occurring in the second half.

Despite the physical nature of the bout, Billy Belmonte and Gonzalo Hernandez still launched a team-high four shots a piece with six of those on goal.

It was the second tie in the history of the series and shifted the UD’s overall record against Wartburg to 5-9-2. After going winless in their first seven meetings against Wartburg, the Spartans have compiled a 5-2-1 record in their last eight contests.

The Spartans travel to Elmhurst College (8-3-3, 2-1-1 CCIW) this Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 p.m. Elmhurst defeated Millikin University, 4-0, on the road in their last game.
