Spartans Secure #6 Seed in IIAC Volleyball Tournament

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team qualified for the 2014 Iowa Conference Volleyball Tournament as the #6 seed despite losing on the final night of the regular season to Loras 1-3. The Spartans entered the night with either a chance to play at the #3-seeded Buena Vista University Beavers or at the #4-seeded Central College Dutch on Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the first round. UD lost to the Duhawks by set scores 20-25, 13-25, 25-19, 18-25. Loras earned the #5-seed with the victory and will travel to Pella to play Central on Tuesday night as UD will make the long journey down highway 20 to Storm Lake to play BV. Game times are set for 7:00 p.m.

UD ws led by Klaudia Baseriak who garnered 18 kills in 51 attacks for a .216 hitting percentage. Amanda Reetz and Karrah Davis finished with eight kills each and Amy Travel had seven kills. Hannah Zieser grabbed 40 set assists and assisted with two blocks. Kristin Wright kept the Spartans alive with 21 defensive digs as the Duhawks hit .231 as a team. 

The #6-seeded Spartans (12-23 overall, 2-5 in IIAC) will face the #3-seeded Beavers (20-9 overall, 5-2 in IIAC). The Beavers beat the Spartans 3-1 last week by set scores of 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21. UD struggled offensively hitting just .194 as the Beavers hit .303 in the victory in Dubuque. The winner of the match-up will travel to Waverly on November 6 to meet up with the #2-seeded Wartburg Knights at 7:00 p.m.
