Waddell and Lynn Claim IIAC Performer of the Week Honors

Nov 11, 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Defender Lauren Waddell and forward Katie Lynn took home the Iowa Conference offensive and defensive performer of the week awards after leading the University of Dubuque women’s soccer team to their second IIAC tournament title with wins over Wartburg and Central.

Lynn was a force off the bench after scoring both of UD’s goals in 2-1 win over Wartburg last Wednesday. She would convert a quick pass from Lisa Rosas in the 39th minute and a put-back from her own deflection off the keeper’s hands in the 69th. Both goals tied her for the team lead with Megan Siepler at nine goals apiece on the season. She finished the match with a game-high six shots, including three on goal.

It was the second time in three years the Spartans have eliminated Wartburg in the IIAC semifinals.

Against Central in a thrilling 0-0, 2OT final decided by penalty kicks, Lynn was part of a relentless attack that posted a 20-11 shot and a 2-1 corner kick advantage. She ended up with the second-most shots in the game with six, three of which were on goal. Lynn’s aggressiveness through both games on the offensive end paid off after a relatively reserved 18 shots in seven IIAC regular-season games.

The two-time IIAC Performer of the Week honoree majors in Sports Marketing and Management.

Waddell was the anchor on the UDefensive back line for the Spartans after they surrendered one goal combined during IIAC tourney play. She helped limit Wartburg and Central below their season average in shots attempted per game after surrendering just 15 and 11 shots, respectively. The UDefense also shut down a staple of Wartburg’s offense after holding the Knights to one corner kick after they averaged a league-high 9.86 CK’s during IIAC play.

The 2013 First Team All-IIAC honoree and 2012 Second Team All-IIAC selection majors in biology.

Both players played a key part in outshooting opponents, 372-200, over the course of the season, including 182-81 in the first half.

The Spartans anxiously await NCAA Regional matchup against Illinois Wesleyan (14-6-1) this Friday, November 14th at Wheaton, Ill. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
