Men’s Basketball Victorious in Season Opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Andre Norris recorded his first double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds as the University of Dubuque men’s basketball team pulled away from Concordia (Wis.) midway through the second half to claim victory in the Johnson Bank City Classic hosted by Carroll University.

The Spartans held a slim 39-38 lead after an evenly played first half where both teams shot 15 of 31 from the field. Norris and Brandon Ferguson got the Spartans (1-0) going midway through the second with a 12-0 run, all on jumpers. Ferguson scored eight points and Norris tallied four to give UD the 57-47 advantage. Carroll (0-1) never got closer than five points for the remainder of the game.

Ferguson scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine boards, while Gage Heffernan added nine points and seven boards. Transfer Jeremy Ware scored his first points in the blue and white after tallying three points, one assist, and four rebounds.

UD overcame a 21-point effort by Concordia's bench as the Spartan starters scored all but five of their points.

Starter Keith Kahlfeldt led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 points on 14 shots. 

It was the Spartans fourth-straight season-opening win.

The Spartans will advance to play Carroll on Sunday, November 16th at 4:00 PM in the Johnson Bank City Classic championship game.
