Rivera Pins Down IIAC Award After Dominant Weekend

DUBUQUE, Iowa – He came. He saw. He conquered.

Spartan senior and team captain, Nicholas Rivera, finished a perfect 3-0 by the combined score of 32-8 at the University of Chicago Duals last Saturday to earn the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Wrestler of the Week award.

Rivera came up big at 133 lbs after taking down Evan Guffey of St. John’s 11-2 in a major decision and following up with a convincing win over Duke Bogicovic of the no. 8 ranked junior college, Harper College, 12-4. Rivera capped off his trio of wins with a 9-2 victory over Chandler Moore of no. 2 Wabash College.

The Mesa, Ariz. native has won six of his last seven matches and improves to 7-8 on the year. Rivera’s last time out, he placed second at the North Central College Wrestling Tournament on December 13.

The 2013-14 NCAA Academic All-American award winner majors in computer information systems and mathematics.

Next up on the docket for Rivera and his Spartan teammates are the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) duals on January 9-10 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
