Solid Start for Women’s Track & Field at Solomon W. Butler Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s track & field team saw a number of Top-10 performances amidst a seventh-place team finish in their second home meet of the season, the Solomon W. Butler Classic.

Regarded as the kick start to the Spartans indoor season, a mix of veterans and freshman Sydney Sears got UD going from the outset.

Senior Rachel Busjahn (triple jump), junior Alexis Higgins (high jump) and Sears (600 meters) recorded UD’s highest finishes with a trio of second place showings. Busjahn matched a personal best with a leap of 10.93m (35’10.5”), good for 3rd-place all-time in UD history. Higgins followed suit after matching a career-high with a jump of 1.63m (5’4.25”), also the 3rd-best jump of all-time. Sears 600m time of 1:46.84 placed her 4th all-time in UD history.

Other top-3 performances included the 4x200m relay team of Busjahn, senior Nikki McKenzie, sophomore Jasmine Bethea, and sophomore Brittany Burns who finished third in 1:51.28 and UD weight throw indoor record holder Katelyn Herbig’s third-place performance (15.08m, 49’5.75”) in that same event.

Note
Six of the women competed for the second day in a row after running/jumping in the Wartburg relays on Friday night. Some highlights include the women’s sprint medley team of Bethea, McKenzie, Burns, and Busjahn that broke their own school record after running a 4:26.55. Bethea, McKenzie, and Burns also placed 4-5-6 in the 60 meters after running personal bests of 8.30, 8.31, and 8.32, respectively.

The Spartans compete in the Monmouth Invitational next Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m.
