Spartan Wrestling Edged out Against #17 Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque wrestling team may have lost their ranking in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, but that didn't slow them down from nearly toppling #17-ranked Coe College Kohawks on Thursday night.
UD opened up with two quick victories to grab the lead 6-0. Coe rallied back to tie match up at end of 149 lbs. Former ranked Brian Travis set out to prove he deserves a ranking and won by a technical fall 18-3 in 5:00 to give UD lead 11-6. Elton Turnage won at 174 lbs. before Coe would again battle back and capture 184 and 197. Senior Dan Howell earned the decision 7-4 at 285 lbs., but Coe captured the match by a single point 18-17.
A late match takedown with under two seconds in one of the Spartans loss and a couple of other scrambles for extra points left the Spartans short of toppling a high-ranked team. Friday the Spartans will once again find them fighting off another high ranked squad in the #18-ranked Cornell College Rams on Senior Night in Stoltz Sports Center. UD will honor the seniors prior to start of match at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday the Spartans host the Jim Fox Open beginning at 9:00 a.m. in McCormick Gymnasium and Stoltz Sports Center.
