Ortiz Sets School Record in First Career Mile Win

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Fabiola Ortiz added to her growing list of UD accolades after blazing to a 5:18.70 mile, a University of Dubuque Women’s Track record, at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday.

Ortiz’s time beat her previous best of 5:23.11 set three weeks earlier at the Monmouth Invite. The sophomore won her first mile of her career and her school record time currently sits sixth on the Iowa Conference list.

Ortiz led a slew of personal records and impressive individual performances in a meet that did not feature team scores. 

"We had a good day today, with many personal and seasonal bests all around," said Assistant Coach Geoff Gundlach. "All the event groups did a nice job and competed hard. Plus it's fun to see a few more school records go down as well."

Senior Rachael Busjahn recorded a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.90m/35’9.25”. Busjahn followed up with a fourth-placed showing in the 200 meters (27.17). Brittany Burns took fifth in the 200 meters with an identical time as Busjahn’s (27.17), but won the 60 meters in a personal best of 8.14. Burns 60 time now sits sixth overall in the IIAC.

The Spartan throwing contingent took home spots 2-5-6-7 in the weight throw with Nicole Forson leading the charge after tossing a 14.93m/48’11.75”. Leading the way in the shot put was a 2-3 finish by freshmen Tanasha Atwater (12.45m/40'10.25") and Lauren Egnarski (11.65m/38'2.75"). Atwater already owns the school record of 12.92m/42.75" in the shot put and currently sits second in the Iowa Conference. It was her fourth runner up finish of the year as well.

In the field, freshman Amanda Sinkler snags a personal record after pole vaulting to a height of 11’2.25” to finish second. Sophomore Amanda Zbilski turned in a fifth place showing with a vault of 2.96m/9’8.5”.

Senior Nikki McKenzie did her thing after placing fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.97m/16’3.75”. McKenzie currently tops the IIAC in the triple jump at 11.06m/36’3.5” and sits sixth in the long jump 5.07m/16’7.75”.

The Spartans host meet number three, the UD Spartan Invite, this Friday, February 20 in A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track at 4:00 p.m.
