2015 NCAA Central Regionals Full Brackets
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque wrestling team finished with 65.5 points in the 2015 NCAA Division III Central Regional for a seventh place finish. The Top-3 wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the 2015 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships March 13-14 at Hershey, Pa., the Spartans failed to gain a national qualifier in 2015. UD's best finishes were a quartet of fifth place finishes and a pair of sixth place finishes.
Senior Brian Travis (157 lbs.) wrestled his way to the semifinals against Wartburg's Drew Wagenhoffer. After the pair battled through two periods and lots of scrambling it wasn't until the third period where Wagonhoffer began to stretch the lead into a 12-4 final. Manny Mendoza (165 lbs.) also was just a win away from the championship finals and a trip to nationals before suffering a rib injury and losing by a fall to Coe's Farai Sewera in 2:29. Elton Turnage (174 lbs.) won by a quick fall in his opener in 1:15 before a 4-0 decision in the second round. He would face Wartburg's Brandon Welter in the semifinals and lost a heart breaking 4-3 decision after gaining a possible takedown as time expired. Dan Howell (285 lbs.) faced #4-ranked Benjamin Nagle of Wartburg in the semifinals. Howell tied the match late in the third period with a takedown to knot the match. Some discussions by the officials and Nagle was awarded a point to capture the victory, squashing his chance for an automatic national qualifying spot by reaching the finals. Nagel would capture the title with a 7-2 victory in the finals.
