Men's Lacrosse Capture First Conference Win

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as four players scored three goals each in the Spartans first Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin conference (CCIW) victory, 12-4, over Carroll University on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (2-5, 1-1 CCIW) took a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game and was fueled by offensive catalyst, Josh Berey-Wingate, who scored two goals and assisted another in the outburst. UD took full advantage of two Carroll penalties with two goals coming in man-up situations.

Carroll (0-3, 0-3 CCIW) countered wih three straight goals spanning the first and second quarters, but Berey-Wingate netted the last goal of the half to put UD up 5-3 at the break.

It became the Icle Freeland show in the third quarter as he totaled three goals and helped extend UD lead to 9-4. Freeland also added two assists in the quick start. The Spartans closed with three insurance goals in the fourth to provide the final margin of victory.

Britton Harris scored one goal in the emphatic 4-0 start and totaled two in the fourth quarter while Tyson Svoboda scored UD's second goal of the game and added one goal each in the third and fourth quarters.

The Spartans Joshua Cramer was not a part of the scoring foursome but did his part after racking up two assists and tied Freeland with a team-high eight ground balls.

Besides the score, the game was too close to call in every facet of the game. UD came out on the right side despite the shot count (37-31 UD), saves (13-13), ground balls (50-42 Carroll), turnovers (26-27 UD), faceoffs (10-9 Carroll), and clears (14-10 UD) statistics being the most competitive in any game this season.

The Spartans face perennial CCIW power, Augustana (Ill.) (8-2) in second home game of the year on Friday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m.
