OSKALOOSA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday to Gustavus Adolphus College, losing the first game 4-8 and the second game by 6-14. The Spartans fall to 8-12 overall and prepare to open Iowa Conference action at home on Tuesday, March 31.

In the first game the Spartans jumped out to an early lead 1-0 and stretched the lead to 4-0 before Gustavus tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bicek captured the grand slam homer. The game remained knotted through the top of the eighth inning despite the Spartans leaving bases loaded in the sixth and two on in the seventh. UD opened the eighth with Kuras struck out swinging. Billesbach doubled to left field. Schmidt singled up the middle; Billesbach advanced to third. Schmidt stole second. Smith struck out swinging. Gerace popped up to 2b to end the eighth.  

Gustavus opened the bottom of the eighth as Breneman singled up the middle. Rachel Malo out at first p to 2b, SAC, bunt; P. Breneman advanced to second. Addy Nelsen popped up to 2b. H. Heacox walked. Shelby Nosan walked; H. Heacox advanced to second; P. Breneman advanced to third. It was a once again bases loaded for Bicek who would find the magic and end the game with a grand slam homerun.

The second game of the doubleheader UD trailed 1-0 until the top of the third inning when Gustavus exploded for a 10 run inning off five hits. The Spartans rallied to score in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but the damage was too much to overcome in the 6-14 loss. UD would collect 11 hits in the loss. Gianna Kuras connected on three of four at bats and finished with a pair of RBI's.

The Spartans begin Iowa Conference action this week with Wartburg College on Tuesday, March 31, and the Cancer Awareness game against the Loras College Duhawks on Thursday, April 2 with both games starting at 3:00 p.m.
