Men's Tennis Splits a Pair Against IIAC Rivals

PELLA and INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's tennis team took on a pair of Iowa Conference rivals as they fell to Central, 2-7, and defeated Simpson, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Matthew Sablay and Ranfer Hernandez snagged the lone pair of wins for the Spartans (4-11, 0-2 IIAC) at the number two and number four singles spot, respectively. Sablay went the distance to defeat his opponent 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 while Hernandez handled the opposition, 7-5, 7-5.

Hernandez improved to a team-best 10-6 in singles play this spring.

Sablay paired with Richard Rhinehart were defeated 8-5 in number one doubles while Hernandez and Hamling fell in number two doubles by the narrow score of 8-6.

The Spartans dropped to 2-10 all-time vs. Central (5-6, 3-0 IIAC).

The Spartans (5-11, 1-1 IIAC) upended the Storm (4-11, 1-1 IIAC) after sweeping all six singles matches. Nikolay Gospodinov won his match handedly, 6-0, 6-0, at the number three position while Hernandez took care of business, 6-0, 6-1, at the number four spot.

Rhinehart and Sablay were the lone Spartan doubles team to secure a win with an 8-5 triumph.

UD moved to 6-9 all-time vs. Simpson.

The Spartans take on Coe (15-4, 4-0 IIAC) at home this Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
