Softball Returns Home to Split Against BVU

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team returned home on Saturday and captured a split with the Buena Vista University Beavers (13-14 overall, 4-4 in IIAC). The Spartans lost the opener when they allowed four runs to score in the first two innings on four hits. BVU held on to a 4-1 victory. UD once again fell behind early in the second game of the doubleheader by a 3-0 score after the first inning. UD added a run in the second and took the lead in the fifth when they scored three runs on four hits. BVU threatened at the top of the seventh with two runners on and one out until they hit into a doubleplay to stop any chance they had with the final score 4-3 in favor of the Spartans.

In game one, Megan Loes came in for relief and threw 5.2 innings and allowed just two hits, struck out six after facimg 21 Buena Vista batters. Hannah Koerperich took the loss for the Spartans after allowing four runs on four hits with just two being earned in 1.1 innings. The Spartans were held to seven hits in the loss and were led offensively by Andrea Smith who went 3-3 at the plate. Courtney Markin was 1-2 with an RBI in the bottom of the fourth.

The second game of the Iowa Conferenc tilt, the Spartans would spot the visiting Beavers three runs to start the first inning, before settling down and scoring four runs in nine hits to capture the split. Kelli Gerace went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Andrea Smith doubled to right center to score both Meggie Schmidt and Ainsley Billesbach for two RBI's in the fifth inning to help UD take the late lead 4-3. BVU would threaten at the top of the seventh when they loaded up the bases only to end the afternoon with Gerace tagging third and firing it across the diamond at first for the doubleplay to end the game. Amanda Williams struck out six Beavers for the 6.1 inning victory by not allowing a run after facing 25 batters.

The Spartans will have a busy week when they host UW-Platteville on Monday, April 13 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader. If the weather holds out, UD will travel to Wisconsin to face UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. Saturday they return to Iowa Conference play when they travel to Cedar Rapids against the Coe College Kohawks at 2:00 p.m.
