Spartans Tennis Drop Match to Beavers

Apr 18, 2015

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's tennis team entered Saturday with high hopes of inching their way closer into the IIAC Tournament berth with a much needed conference victory, but the visiting Buena Vista University Beavers held the same thoughts. The match would teter on the final match of the afternoon between UD's Jordan Hamling and BV's Robby Steffes. Hamling captured the first set 6-1 before losing the second set 3-6. A third tie break set would be for the match and Steffes took the third, 6-2 and ending the Spartans afternoon in defeat 4-5.

The Spartans took 2-3 doubles matches, dropping the #3 doubles match by a score of 3-8. BV rallied to take four of six singles matches. Matthew Sablay won #2 doubles 6-4, 6-0 and Nikolay Gospodinov made quick work at #3 singles winning 6-1, 6-0.

The Spartans finish up by hosting the Luther College Norse on April on April 22 and Loras College Duhawks on April 29 at Frank Farber Tennis Courts. The IIAC Team Tournament is played in Cedar Rapids on May 1-2 for the top-6 qualifiers. Just two teams have punched their ticket to the tournament.

NOTE: This match was later protested due to Buena Vista's reordering of individual matches. As a result, the decision on every individual match at no. 3 and below was reversed. UD now wins, 7-2.
