Spartan Softball Split with Duhawks

Randall Meyer or Howie as he is often referred to around the University of Dubuque campus. He is the custodian for Stoltz/McCormick athletic facilities who has taken pride in his work for the past 10 years. He loves UD and supports all of the student-athletes. He was diagnosed with throat cancer on Jan. 19, 2006, has been in remission for nine years and received treatment at Finley Hospital in Dubuque. Howie tossed out the honorary first pitch in game one of the doubleheader.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque and Loras College softball teams joined forces for National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) StrikeOut Cancer game on Thursday and raised over $1,600 for the local American Cancer Society. The two schools would split the series with UD capturing game one by a 12-9 score before the Duhawks rallied to take game two by a 10-2 margin in five innings.

UD fell behind in the second inning after the Spartans gave up six runs in four hits after two errors in the top of the inning. UD sliced into the lead and would continue to chip away before the Spartans captured the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a four run three hit inning. In the fifth inning with bases loaded, starting leftfielder Andrea Smith went deep for her first career homerun, a four RBI grand slam for the Spartans. UD would end the fifth with five runs on four hits. The Duhawks would add a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh, but it wasn't enough. The Spartans Megan Loes earned the victory after facing 27 batters and collecting five strike outs. Carlee Grunder led UD wth 3-4 at bats with a trio of RBI's. UD ended the opener with 12 runs in 12 hits and finished with five errors, Loras finished with nine runs in four hits and made just one error.

In game two, the second inning would once again haunt the Spartans. The Duhawks ended the top of the second inning with seven runs in four hits and UD committed a pair of errors. UD trailed 1-7 before Kelli Gerace solo homered in the third inning to narrow the lead to 2-7. The Duhawks bats stayed alive and they would add two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-2 at the end of the fifth inning. The Spartans led off the bottom of the fifth with a single by senior Meggie Schmidt. Schmidt would advance to second on a walk to Smith. The pair would be stranded on base after back-to-back strikeouts swinging. The final out was a pop-up to the catcher and the Duhakws won game two in a shortended five innings.

UD improved to 11-13 overall and 3-1 in the IIAC, the Duhawks are 12-12 overall and 1-3 in the IIAC. The Spartans face Central College next week in Pella, before returning home to host Buena Vista on Saturday, April 11.
