PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball swept the Easter Weekend series over the Central College Dutch 3-1. The Spartans lone loss was a marathon 13 inning defeat 3-4 in the first game on Saturday, April 4. UD rallied back to capture the second game 8-7 to improve their IIAC record to 4-6 and their overall record to 9-13.

The lengthy game one lasted over three hours and kept the fans in their seats as the UD jumped on top 2-0 in the fifth after a two run, two hits inning. The Dutch knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth and it would stay tied until the ninth when both teams put a lone run on the board. It appeared the Spartans might be on their way to the win after Austin McWhite led off the inning on a solo homer. UD would strand two runners on base after a final strike out looking ended the inning. Central started with a lead off walk and an error kept the inning alive where they would tie the game at the bottom of the ninth on a one run, one hit and a Spartan error. Three more scoreless innings pushed the game past the three hour mark despite the Spartans putting a runner on base in all three innings. The top of the 13th inning ended quickly for UD, a fly out, a ground out and a strike out looking. Central opened the bottom of the 13th with a single. A sac bunt advanced the leadoff runner to second before a error would advance the runner to third. A single up the middle would end the game in favor of the Dutch with UD's Josh Eastman taking the hard fought loss after throwing seven tough innings.

The Spartans turned two doubleplays and Daniel Casanova would join McWhite as the only other extra base hit with a triple in the top of the fourth inning. UD finished the game with three runs on 10 hits.

In the final game of the series, UD trailed through four innings to the host Dutch 4-7 and would tie the game in the top of the fifth after Florek walked. Florek advanced to second on a wild pitch. Karrick grounded out to p; Florek advanced to third. Florek scored on a wild pitch. Lewan walked. Workman singled up the middle; Lewan advanced to second. Dornacker to p for Wolken. Florio doubled to left field, RBI; Workman advanced to third; Lewan scored. Casanova hit by pitch. Garst flied out to lf, RBI; Workman scored. McWhite struck out swinging, but not after the Spartans has scored three runs on two hits. 

UD's Salazar singled to left field to get the inning rolling. Monfross pinch ran for Salazar. Florek hit by pitch; Monfross advanced to second. Karrick walked; Florek advanced to second; Monfross advanced to third. Schissel to p for Dornacker. Lewan struck out swinging. Workman grounded out to p unassisted, SAC, bunt, RBI; Karrick advanced to second; Florek advanced to third; Monfross scored. Florio grounded out to 3b, bunt, but the Spartans took the lead on a one run, one hit inning. Spartan pitcher Reed Stumpf stepped up and delivered three straight strike outs to end the game 8-7 in favor of UD. He earned the win in just 1.2 innings pitched and a stellar four strike outs after facing just five batters.

The Spartans will get a short rest before facing #14 Wartburg College in Waverly on April 10-11. The Knights split with #17 Buena Vista over Easter Weekend.
