Atwater Breaks Weight Throw Record as Throwers Roll at UW-Platteville

Feb 13, 2016

COMPLETE RESULTS
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Sophomore Tanasha Atwater won her ninth and tenth throwing events of the season and set a new school record in the weight throw (16.80m/55-1.5) by nearly three feet in leading the University of Dubuque women’s track team at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

No team scores were kept at UW-Platteville, but the Spartan throwers would have racked up a healthy sum after taking six of the Top-10 places in the weight throw and four of the Top-9 in shot put.

Atwater won both and to push her individual record to 10-2 on the season. The sophomore’s weight throw mark bested the 2014 record and beat her former personal best by four-and-a-half feet. Finishing third and fourth for the Spartans was Nicole Forson (15.69m/51-5.75) and freshman Rebecca Burmahl (14.08m/46-2.5).

Atwater dominated the field in the shot put after winning by over four feet. Placing runner up was Lauren Egnarski, who set a new personal record of 12.09m/39-8 on her fourth attempt. Finishing sixth was senior Nicole Forson with a toss of 11.26m/36-11.25.

With her record mark in the weight throw, Atwater now leads the Iowa Conference in both throwing events and ranks eight nationally in shot put and 14th in weight throw, respectively.

Distance standout Fabiola Ortiz finished second by three seconds with a time of 10:43.96, which now ranks fourth in the Iowa Conference and just six seconds behind her personal best.

The 4x400m relay team of Katrina Pagel, Amanda Zbilski, Isabella Solis, and Abigail Ray placed fourth in a time of 4:12.15.

Solis continued her strong Saturday with a pair of sixth-place showings individually in the 60 hurdles (10.18) and a personal record in the high jump (1.56m/5-1.25).

UD’s newest transfer from St. Norbert College, freshman Aleyha Slatter, set a personal best in the triple jump (10.15m/33-3.75) in placing fifth.

The Spartans host the UD Invite this Friday, February 19 at 4:00 p.m.
