Atwater, Underclassmen Lead Women's Track to Win at Norse Relays

Apr 11, 2016

COMPLETE RESULTS
DECORAH, Iowa – Sophomore Tanasha Atwater set a Carlson Stadium record with a national-best throw of 46-7.5 in the shot put as the University of Dubuque women’s track and field team collected six wins, five by underclassmen, to win the Luther Norse Relays on Saturday afternoon.

UD claimed victory with 158 points and outdistanced the eight-team field by 24. The Spartans beat out four other Iowa Conference schools with Luther placing second with 134 points and Loras finishing third with 118.

Atwater won her second outdoor shot put title of the season in more-than-impressive fashion after breaking her previous school record by nearly two-and-a-half feet. She now leads the nation by nearly a foot!

In just her second outdoor meet, freshman Isabella Solis impressed in winning the 400m hurdles (1:07.56), the high jump (1.45m/4-9), and placing second in the 100m hurdles (15.96).

Freshman transfer Aleyha Slatter won her first triple jump contest (10.35m/33-11.5) by over three feet.

The throwing contingent finished won two total events thanks to senior Nicole Forson in the hammer throw (48.39m/158-9) and sophomore standout Tanasha Atwater in the shot put (14.21m/46-7.5).

The Spartans throwers were their usual dominant selves as UD claimed three of the Top-4 spots in the shot put, spots two through sixth in the discus, three of the Top-5 in the hammer throw, and third and fifth in the javelin.

In relays, the Spartans claimed victory in the 4x100m relay behind Jamie Draeger, Brittany Burks, Candice Enis, and Amanda Zbilski and placed second in the rare 4x1600m relay thanks to the quartet of Kayla Kinateder, Fabiola Ortiz, Kiersten Wenthold, and Kristin Mackenburg (22:33.05). All eight aforementioned Spartans competing in relays were underclassmen.

The Spartans head to the UW-Platteville Invitational next Saturday, April 16.
