Atwater Wins Seventh Straight Heading Into IIAC Championships

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Sophomore thrower Tanasha Atwater was at it again after winning both the shot put (13.46/44-2) and the weight throw (15.80/51-10) for her sixth and seventh straight individual wins in leading the University of Dubuque women’s track and field team to a win at the UD Spartan Invite on Friday night.
The Spartans won the meet with 100 points as they outdistanced Loras, Luther, and the rest of the seven-team field by seven points. UD will face the pair again next Friday and Saturday in the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.
Atwater, who has won 12 of 14 throwing events this winter, bested the field by in both the shot put and weight throw. The reigning Iowa Conference field performer of the week still leads the conference in both events.
Senior Nicole Forson, the previous weight throw record holder set a new personal record by over a foot in the weight throw (15.58m/51-1.5) as she placed runner up to Atwater. Lauren Egnarski and Keely Gleen finished fourth and fifth as the Spartans took four of the Top-5 spots.
Junior Fabiola Ortiz took home third in the mile and moved up to third in the Iowa Conference with a time of 5:15.49. Her time bested her previous season-high of 5:30.
Both MichelleAnn Sanchez and Brittany Burns placed fourth (8.85) in the 55m hurdles and 200 meters (26.94), respectively.
