Baseball Drop a Pair of Close Games at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team fell to the Beavers by a total of three runs in a pair of defeats, 4-3, and, 5-3, on Friday afternoon.

Designated Tyler Imrich led the team with three RBI and catcher Will Doherty had three hits as the Spartans (14-16, 7-11 Iowa Conference) utilized just three pitchers while scoring six runs on a combined 15 hits.

UD gave the #23 Beavers (21-7, 12-4 Iowa Conference) all they could handle in two of Buena Vista’s closest games of the Iowa Conference season. The Beavers have now won seven of their last eight games.

Three-Run Third Inning Sinks Spartans

UD starter, freshman Chase Kueter (1-2), struck out five and allowed four earned runs, with three of those coming in the decisive second inning.

It was more than enough for the Beavers as the Spartans cut the lead to 4-3 on a fielder’s choice RBI groundout in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t muster anything in the top of the seventh.

Kueter allowed 10 hits over six innings in his first career start while his battery mate, catcher Will Doherty notched two hits, two runs, and one RBI. The designated hitter Tyler Imrich tied a game-high with two RBIs.

The Beavers utilized a complete game showing from starter Justin Lange (5-1), who allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Spartans Fall Short Despite Outhitting Beavers

The Spartans outhit the Beavers, 8-7, but their eighth inning rally fell short for the fourth straight time against Buena Vista.

Buena Vista scored one run in each of the first three innings to erase the Spartans 2-1 lead through the first two. After allowing two more Beaver runs on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, UD got it going with a walk in the top of the eighth with a leadoff single by centerfie.

McWhite was driven in on a sacrifice fly as a Spartan strikeout ended the inning.

Spartan starter, lefthander Jacob Padilla (7-5) incurred the loss after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing five earned runs and seven hits.

Third basemen Dalton Garst paced the Spartan offense with one hit and one RBI.

UD faces Buena Vista on the road, Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m.
