Baseball Sweeps Greenville for First Wins of Season

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The University of Dubuque baseball team took advantage of four Greenville errors in game one win, 6-4, and piled up 17 hits in 10-5 rout of the Panthers in game two for first pair of wins on Saturday.

Padilla, Bottom of the Order Bats Leads Spartans to First Victory

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Junior Jacob Padilla pitched a scoreless 5.1 innings of relief and the bottom of the order bats notched four hits and four RBI to lead University of Dubuque baseball team to first victory of season over Greenville (Ill.), 6-4.

Padilla (1-0) surrendered just two hits and struck out two as the Spartans (1-1) avenged Friday’s walk-off loss to Greenville by scoring three unearned runs on four Panther errors.

UD scored four runs in the second and one each in the fifth and the sixth thanks to one RBI each from LF Jacob Evans, 2B Gaetano Florio, SS Ryan Karrick, and CF Trace Florek, who represented the final four bats in the lineup.

Florek registered a team-high two hits, including the Spartans first triple of the season and also stole one base.

UD starter Doug Van Dyke allowed four hits and four earned runs, including a two-run homer, in 3.2 innings.

Doherty, Offense Lights Up Early in Run Away Win

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The University of Dubuque baseball team, led by junior Will Doherty’s three hits (including home run) and four RBI, scored all 10 runs in the first four innings as they swept Greenville after a 10-5 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Doherty followed Tyler Imrich's lead-off single by launching a two-run homer in the top of the third for the Spartans (2-1) first home run of the season. It gave the Spartans an 8-2 lead at the time en route to their second victory of the season.

UD finished with 17 hits and came out swinging after scoring five runs in the first inning. All top-8 hitters in the lineup generated at least one one hit as the octet scored all 10 runs and collected all 17 hits. Doherty, CF Trace Florek, and 1B Austin McWhite led the way with three hits apiece.

Greenville’s (1-7) Nate Miller led the offense with three hits, two runs, and one RBI.

UD starter Reed Stumpf (1-0) earned the victory despite giving up five runs (two earned) while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work.

Junior relief pitcher Trent Van Egtern silenced the Panther bats and allowed one hit in a scoreless 4.0 innings of relief.

The Spartans head to Tucson, Arizona for Spring Break where they will face five opponents in the span of five days from March 14-18.
