DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's and women's basketball teams' pre-season bonanza, Spartan Madness, got fans excited for the upcoming season and featured Iowa Conference Championship banner unveilings, team scrimmages, a three-point contest, and a dunk contest along with free prizes and giveaways throughout the night.
Newly renovated Stoltz Sports Center saw UD men's preseason All-American, senior Andre Norris, take home the dunk title and sophomore Braanna Steen shoot her way to the women's three-point championship. Both faced heavy competition from their teammates as it preceded a separate shooting contest that included mixed teams of athletes and students.
Tipping off the event was the Iowa Conference Championship banner unveilings followed by player introductions and one, 10-minute intra-squad scrimmage by each team. Throughout the night, free giveaways such as pizza, Spartan Madness t-shirts, and various door prizes were given out to those in attendance.
"Spartan Madness was a great event that our team will remember for a long time," said men's Head Coach Rob Sieverding. "We had a lot of fun with the student participants and the dunk contest provided some quality entertainment! All in all it was a great night and a chance for the general public to see this year’s team. We want to thank Spartan Nation for coming out and supporting our program and look forward to seeing many of those same faces in the stands in the coming weeks!
The women open up their season on the road at St. Scholastica on Friday, November 13 while the men get it going at home against UW-Platteville on Monday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m.
