ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore Alec Bass earned a 105th place finish in a time of 26:41 at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College in a field that featured Division I and Division II schools in a 50-team, 600 runner field on Friday night.

The Spartans finished 29th overall with a final score of 921 points after traversing the flat and speedy Saukie Golf Course. The University of Illinois took home the team title with 65 points while fellow Iowa Conference opponent Wartburg placed second with 114 points. Loras (5th, 135), and Simpson (16th, 540) were the other pair of Iowa Conference foes.

It was a youth movement as six of the Spartan varsity runners were underclassmen. Senior leader Payton Nevills was the second Spartan finishers after crossing the tape in 27:07, good for a 168th place showing. A trio of freshman placed within 14 seconds of each other after Hunter Klose ran 28:41 (222nd), Hunter Reifschneider placed 227th (28:47), and Riley Holst rounded out the Varsity scorers in a time of 28:55 (232nd). Junior Jon Berland (238th, 29:08) and sophomore Ames Helzer (241st, 29:15) rounded out the Varsity contingent.

The Spartans head to the Warrior Invite hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran next Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m. The Spartans won their first team title in over 50 years in last year's 16-team Warrior Invite.
