WEST ALLIS, Wis. - Junior Fabiola Ortiz placed second overall to an unattached runner and junior Kiersten Wenthold crossed in ninth place as the University of Dubuque women's cross country team garnered their best finish of the season in a runner-up performance at the 13-team Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Spartans tallied 92 points after placing four runners in the Top-25 as Beloit took home the team title with ease thanks to 35 points. It was the second straight year the Spartans placed second at the Warrior Invitational after losing out to Trinity Christian, 60-52, a year ago.

Ortiz paced the Spartans with her third, Top-5 finish of the season with a time of 23:01. Backing up Ortiz was Wenthold, whose time of 25:18 placed her ninth overall. Freshman Abby Ray, in her first race back from injury, crossed the line in 25:41 in a 17th-place showing. Sophomore Kayla Kinateder posted a time of 25:58, good for 21st overall, while sophomore Kristin Mackenburg rounded out the Spartan Five in 53rd place with a time of 27:58.

Sophomore Katrina Pagel set her second personal record in the last three races with a time of 30:00 in an 85th-place showing and sophomore Bobbi Jo Helgemoe completed the Spartan Varsity with a 105th place time of 33:11.

"Our ladies were aggressive today and put themselves in the front of the pack which is a different approach from eearlier in the year," said Head Coach Geoff Gundlach. "This was a nice meet to risk a bit more early in the race by trying to run hard from the gun. Fabi (Ortiz) was able to take a win as she was beaten by only one unattached athlete. I'm excited for our groups to keep working hard together."

The Spartans stay in Dubuque as they take on the Dr. Tucker Invite hosted by Loras at the Dubuque Soccer Complex on Friday, October 16 at 4:30 p.m.
