Cardiac Win for Spartans Football

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team held on to capture the road win against the Simpson College Storm 31-24. The Spartans scored inside the final minute to break a 24-24 tie on a five yard Maurece Herrion touchdown run. The cardiac comeback for UD left time on the clock and Simpson stormed the ball down the field in the final 44 seconds before Cody Binicewicz picked off a pass at the Spartan 20 yard line in the final :14 seconds to capture the battle and improve to 2-0 in the Iowa Conference.
UD's first points of the afternoon were on a Curtis Prull 24 yard field goal with 1:12 eft of the second quarter. At the 10:36 mark of the third quarter, Tarshma Jackson scored on a two yard run after an eight play 69 yard drive for the Spartans to cut the Storm lead to 10-14. The Spartans took the lead 17-14 after seven yard touchdown grab from Dylan Schultz from Rio Johnson. The Storm roared back and took the lead after a four play 43 yard drive with :14 seconds left of the third quarter. The Spartans responded with a seven play 74 yard score on a Herrion three yard run at 12:45 left in the final quarter to lead 24-21. The Storm once again breezed down the field to knot the game at 24-24 after a 22 yard field goal with 2:40 left. UD's offense used a nine play 75 yard possession to re-take the lead 31-24 after Herrion scored his second touchdown in the second half on a five yard scamper. In the waining seconds, the Storm's fast paced offense moved the ball 28 yards on five plays to the Spartan 33 yard line with just :14 seconds to go before the interception by Binicewicz helped seal the Spartan victory.
Trenton Grana-Curry led the receivers with six catches for 139 yards while Herrion gained 87 yards on the ground. The Spartan defense made some key stops, none bigger than the final Simpson interception by Binicewicz on UD's 20 yard line with time running out. Dylan Hastings led the Spartans with 13 tackles inlcuding one for a loss. Larry Harleston finished with 10 tackles and two quarterback hurries and Blaine Snitker had nine. Special team play, Connor O'Malley punted three times for 124 yards for a season high average of 41.3 pards per punt. Brayden Neuendorf kicked off six times for 341 yards for an average of 56.8 yards a kick. Curtis Prull was a pe4rfect 4-4 in extra points and 1-1 in field goals with a 24 yard field goal in the second quarter.
UD improves to 2-0 in the Iowa Conference and 3-2 overall. Next week the Spartans welcome #6-ranked Wartburg College (5-0 overall, 2-0 in IIAC) to Chalmers Field with a 2:00 p.m. kick-off.
