The University of Dubuque’s Office of Multicultural Student Engagement and the Black Student Union will co-host the annual Disc Jockey Battle Event, Friday February 26, 2016, 9:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m., at Courtside (2095 Holliday Dr, Dubuque, IA 52002). This year’s DJ Battle Event will feature Mishereen Ellis - DJ Malicious, and Venchileni Smith - DJ Boobah. This event is open to the public; tickets are $5 in advance (contact the Office of Multicultural Student Engagement at 563.589.3129), and $10 at the door.

Mishereen Ellis aka DJ Malicious is originally from St. Catherine, Jamaica, but grew up in Milwaukee, WI. She is an avid lover of music, and started DJing for college parties in 2003 when she was a student at Clarke University. Since then, DJ Malicious has taken her passion for music and seeing people have a good time a lot more seriously. By day she works in higher education, but by night she transforms into DJ Malicious. Her best DJ moment: Having the honor of DJing along side Chris Brown's former DJ and Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star, DJ Babey Drew.

Music has always been a part of DJ Boobah’s life. His family history is replete with professional musicians, performers, Gospel, Jazz, and Rhythm and Blues singers. Being the grandson of a prominent Baptist minister, music became a way of life, gravitating toward music and entertainment as a logical consequence. Boobah started out playing a couple of instruments, but that did not sustain his interest. Then, while playing music for his four-year-old brother, he received a dare from his sister. Seeking to prove her wrong, he decided to test out his disc jockey skills. From this experience he found his musical niche. At the tender age of 13, he began to DJ for family and friends, and fell in love with the art form. He later studied, trained, and worked hard to hone his craft.

Currently, his fame has skyrocketed to celebrity status, and he is being compared to the elite DJ’s of his time. “He is a phenomenon and has revolutionized the local DJing arena,” echoed Ray Nitti (national recording artist). He draws enormous crowds, and has mainstream appeal along with a broad and diverse fan base. He also has amassed a copious Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram following.
