Exciting Opening Day in Jon Davison Men's Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Mt. Mercy survived a hotly contested match against Simpson, 78-74, in their opening game of the Jon Davison Classic.

After holding a slim, 29-28 lead at the half, the Mustangs (10-4) registered a blistering 59.3% shooting percentage, including 7-for-13 from three-point land in the second stanza to pull away from the Storm. Tre Wagner and Mychael Brawner each scored a team-high 17 points to give Mt. Mercy its third win over an Iowa Conference opponent this season.

Simpson (6-4) fell short of their third-straight victory despite a career-high 24 points from forward Sam Amsbaugh. The Storm shot just 41.0% on the game and 6-for-27 (22.2%) from behind the arc, but kept pace with the Mustangs behind an offensive attack that featured 11 players with at least 10 minutes of playing time.

Dubuque, Iowa - The host University of Dubuque Spartans opened the 2015 Jon Davison Classic with a 67-51 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology. 

UD led at the break 37-23, despite struggling at the free throw line where they sank 8-17 attempts. The two teams would both end the evening shooting under 30% from the three point area. UD sank 6-21 (28.6%) while the Scarlet Hawks made 4-17 (23.5%). The Spartan reserves would add 22 points off the bench and UD grabbed the advantage off turnovers and scored 17 points. 

Andre Norris led all scorers with 18 points and collected nine rebounds. Kain Arthofer finished with 11 points and Jake weber had 10 points. IIT was led in scoring by Anthony Mosley who sank 6-11 attempts from the field for 14 points. Sam Rarick and teammate Jake Digiorgia led the Scarlet Hawks with 12 rebounds each.
