STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Spartans (4-2, 3-0 Iowa Conference) hope to ride the momentum from their 45-13 win over No. 22 Wartburg a week ago against an offensive-minded Buena Vista attack. Riding a four-game win streak, the Spartans are now receiving votes in the lastest D3Football.com poll for the first time since 2011.
Buena Vista (1-5, 0-3 Iowa Conference) features a high-powered offense that compensates for a defense that ranks last in the IIAC in total defense and has allowed 40+ points in all three IIAC games. Spartan running back and reigning Iowa Conference Offensive Player of the Week, freshman Maurece Herrion, will be licking his chops against a rushing defense that is yielding 248.7 ypg and a league-worst nine touchdowns on the ground.
Herrion has burst onto the scene after racking up 227 yards and six touchdowns in just two Iowa Conference games. Herrion forms a deadly 1-2 punch with quarterback Rio Johnson, who has been equally effective with 874 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, in three IIAC games.
Despite a 43-13 defeat to open up the IIAC season, the Beaver offense has produced behind the playmaking abilities of quarterback Tory Beger (1106 yards and 7 TDs) and a trio of big performances by Iowa Conference Player of the Week honorees in wide receiver Jalen Henningsen (15 receptions, 304 yards, and 4 touchdowns), running back Cody Mowery (30 carries for 165 yards), and kicker Tyler Stolen (58-yd field goal).
The Spartan defense will be tested as the Beavers and their explosive offense is due for IIAC win No. 1 after totaling over 516+ yards in each of the last two games, both seven-point losses.
Expect a shootout in a series that has been hotly contested in the last five years, including four victories by seven or less points.
